a pint of stout

My dwarves have started taking shape, one short painting session at a time. I like the way the leather gambesons are looking, and as I begin to get an idea of how the whole unit will look, I'm liking what I see all over. It is also just simply nice to be in the studio, listening to music, and putting a little paint to brush again.

Tread lightly ( a peek at things to come )

I always approach anything to do with sculpting with the assumption that I'll end up with something barely passable at best, and possibly totally fuck shit up more often than not.

With that in mind, I'm pretty happy with these 4 spearmen conversions. The shafts are a bit small compared to average gaming scale polearms, but the thought of doing two-piece cast spears and attaching them either side of the hand (even pinned through the middle) just seemed like asking for a world of hurt. I've gamed long enough to know that I'd rather have them look slightly odd and never break in half than break off regularly and look a little better on close inspection. With that in mind, steel and brass rod was the name of the game.

When I was working on them in front of me I didn't think that the far right one looked quite so huge... So when the putty dries I may go and bulk up that tassle a bit more so it looks more akin to the rather large blade to which is attached. On the other hand, this is a unit of 16, and I'm trying to balance an achievable standard with actually getting them done in a reasonable amount of time. We'll see about that.

More ruins for 2011

I did the stonework on these before I left for the holidays and was able to find some more time on this relaxing, long new years weekend to finish up the bases. These are also from the Osgiliath Ruins set from Citadel.

Not long now, and the Town of MadPonies will be done. Or at least as done as it will be for quite some time. :)
